Science Foundation’s (NSF)
U.S.
Antarctic Program. We are
currently looking for a Weather Observer to deploy deep field camps on
a contract basis beginning in October of 2009. Please visit

The contracts runs from Approximately October
2009 through February 2010. We are looking for Primary and Alternate
employees to fill all contract positions.
The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is
next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment
requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for maintaining the camp meteorological equipment and
systems in an operational and calibrated status. Conducts
meteorological observations and reports them to Weather office,
aircraft, and others as required.
Also performs general labor duties as required.
Weather
observation is primary responsibility. Intensive weather reporting
occurs on days when there are flights. Observation, recording, and
reporting of surface weather conditions begins six hours before
aircraft depart McMurdo station. Hourly observations are reported to
MacWeather forecaster. May
require irregular sleep patterns if plane is scheduled to depart early
morning or late at night. On non-flight days, weather is reported
three times a day.
Observes, records and reports wind direction, wind speed, cloud
height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions
and phenomena following Federal Meteorological Handbook standards.
Sets up and maintains portable weather station and ceilometer. Operates and maintains backup sensors.
When not reporting weather, works as support labor for general camp and
science support activities. Required to work outside on various jobs
in extreme cold weather conditions. Duties may include the following:
Cargo Responsibilities:
·
Loading/unloading aircraft. Communicates with
load masters and aircraft personnel.
·
Prepares cargo for movement. May include
packaging, labeling, weighing, and palletizing cargo. Communicates
weights and sizes of cargo with Fixed Wing Supervisor.
·
Assists with waste retrograde and hazardous
cargo identification - labeling and handling prior to shipping back to
McMurdo Station via fixed wing aircraft. May separate and dispose of
materials. Tracks and manifests hazardous waste.
Responsible for packaging and documenting hazardous cargo.
·
Prepare and stage equipment and maintains
storage berms.
Fuels Responsibilities (where no dedicated fuels position exists):
·
Performs fuel tests on aviation fuel.
·
Performs fuel transfers, via pipe, hose and
tanks. May refuel
aircraft, buildings, and vehicles with hand or electric pump.
·
Performs preventive maintenance tasks as
directed.
·
Tracks and reports quantities of fuel delivered
to field and amounts given to aircraft.
Mechanical Responsibilities:
·
Assists with tracking maintenance and repair
needs of all equipment in camp
·
Assists with operating small mechanical
equipment, including chainsaws, drills, welderators, etc. as
appropriate
·
Provides mechanical assistance in the repair of
vehicles and other equipment.
·
Operates light equipment vehicles, such as snow
mobiles, and tracked vehicles.
May groom around camp and runway.
·
Assist in the installation and maintenance of
the skiway as needed.
Science Support/Customer Service:
·
Assists grantees with support requests and
needs, as appropriate
Other Duties:
·
Performs functions with manual equipment such
as shovels, picks, and similar implements.
·
Assist with cooking, track food use, plan
re-supply, and assist with all galley tasks and dish washing, as
needed.
Required Experience: High school diploma or
equivalent is required.
Valid Driver’s License is required.
One year of experience in
weather observation is required.
An additional three years of
combined experience in any of the following: weather reporting,
equipment operation, cargo movement, fuel operations, mechanical
equipment proficiency, logistic support, or other related experience
is required. Demonstrated ability
to observe, record and report wind direction, wind speed, cloud
height, cloud cover, surface visibility, and other weather conditions
is required. Demonstrated ability to work in remote and isolated environments is
required. Computer
competency is required.
Federal Meteorological Handbook experience is preferred.
Special
Conditions: Must
successfully complete the 5 day Observer training class prior to
deployment to Antarctica.

Contract compensation includes reimbursement of
expenses to physically qualify, weekly salary, travel to and from the
ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance based bonus
upon successful completion of your contract.

Satellite Services Incorporated (SSI)
METEOROLOGICAL TECHNICIAN
SSI is seeking qualified applicants
for a dual qualified weather forecaster/observer position at
Homestead Air Reserve Base Florida (20 miles South of Miami). The
Weather Station operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days
a year.
This position requires the ability to observe and
forecast atmospheric weather conditions, brief aircrews and command
staff, issue advisories/warnings, monitor and interpret RADAR/METSAT,
and augment an FMQ-19 to disseminate weather observations.
The ideal candidate for this position would be a prior
enlisted military veteran from the weather career field. Have
successfully completed a DOD approved Observer and Forecaster
course. Have a minimum of two years of practical work experience
supporting military aircraft/operations. Have or be able to obtain
a DOD Secret security clearance. Be able to relocate to Homestead
Florida within 30 days of selection, and be able to work a rotating
shift schedule.
The following specific requirements must be met:
. Minimum of 2-years of aviation forecasting experience.
. Minimum of 2-years of aviation observing experience.
. Minimum of 1 year experience using a weather processing or
dissemination system such as : The Air Force N-TFS, Navy’s MIDDS, or
National Weather Service AWIPS.
. Minimum of 1 year experience in the operation and interpretation
on NEXRAD/OPUP.
. All experience may be concurrent, and must be current
(within the last 5 years).
In addition to base pay, Night/ Sunday
differential, holiday pay, and overtime are also included.
