AWS Observer Magazine
The AWS Observer was in print from the mid-1950's as a monthly black and white tabloid
newspaper then as a color magazine format from January 1995 until the November/December 2006 issue when
it went digital in February 2007 on the Air Force weather Web site at http://www.afweather.af.mil.That website changed to https://www.557weatherwing.af.mil/ when AFW became the 557th Weather Wing.
On 30 April 2026, that website was shutdown as part of the Department of War “Streamlining Communication on Official Public-Facing Websites” directive and relevant content can now be found at https://www.offutt.af.mil/Units/557th-Weather-Wing/
In May 2026, we completed manually digitizing 344 Observer copies from the 1950's through the mid-1990's that were provided by Craig Kirwin who had stored the paper copies for decades. The aging and sometimes fragile yellow paper copies were scanned, page by page, then each page was cropped, edited to remove the yellow tinge, and finally, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) was applied to make them searchable.
